An Allergy - Adult Comprehensive Panel, ImmunoCAP is a specialized test that evaluates Total IgE (antibodies produced by the immune system in response to allergens) as well as specific IgE against 28 different allergy-causing substances or allergens using the Immunocap technique. These allergens include food, dust, trees, molds, grasses, weeds, pet dander, etc. The test results help determine the cause of the allergy and aid in deciding the course of treatment.

An allergy occurs when the immune system mistakenly identifies a harmless substance (allergens) as harmful and produces an inappropriate response by producing antibodies (specific proteins) called Immunoglobulin E (IgE). An Allergy - Adult Comprehensive Panel, ImmunoCAP includes the Total IgE test, a blood test used to measure the complete IgE levels in the blood. This test also includes comprehensive screening to detect the presence of specific IgE antibodies to a wide range of allergens, including environmental allergens (e.g., pollen, dust, animal dander, grass, weed), foods (vegetarian and non-vegetarian), and other common allergy triggers.

Your doctor may suggest the Allergy - Adult Comprehensive Panel, ImmunoCAP if you exhibit symptoms such as nasal congestion, sneezing, itchy/watery eyes, coughing, wheezing, skin rashes, hives, etc. Allergens detection through this panel will help your doctor guide appropriate management and treatment decisions and prevent severe complications. An Allergy - Adult Comprehensive Panel, ImmunoCAP offers 29 test parameters that help examine Total IgE and 28 different allergens, such as food, dust, grass, trees, animals, molds, etc, that can cause allergic reactions in the body. These tests help your doctor develop a treatment plan to address serious health challenges your body may face.

IgE test measures the amount of IgE (immunoglobulin E) in the blood. It is an antibody produced by the immune system in response to danger. Normally, it is present in very small amounts in the blood. It belongs to the class of immunoglobulins which include five types of immunoglobulins:  IgA, IgG, IgM, IgD, and IgE. 


Immunoglobulins are produced by plasma cells (specific immune cells) when the body recognizes bacteria, viruses, other microorganisms or any other unknown substances as harmful foreign antigens to the immune system. 


The production of IgE is seen in cases of response to allergens such as asthma and response to parasitic infections. Other allergens can include plant pollen, eggs, peanuts, bee venom, strawberries, and other allergens substances. 


These IgE antibodies, once produced, bind to white blood cells and lead to the release of substances like histamine. This further causes constriction of bronchi in the lungs in allergic or asthmatic persons. ImmunoCAP blood test results will indicate whether the patient is sensitized (i.e., has IgE antibodies) to specific allergens. However, sensitization to specific allergens does not always indicate a clinical allergy, as sensitization does not always result in symptoms. Results are reported in the amount of IgE antibodies for a specific allergen in kilounits of allergen per liter of blood. A higher level means more likelihood of involvement of that allergen in causing an allergic reaction. Therefore, each patient’s history must be considered before diagnosing an allergy.
