Stool for pH and Reducing Substance is a test used to detect the pH and unabsorbed reducing sugar in the stool such as fructose, glucose, lactose, and galactose. This test helps to assess the conditions related to digestive tract.

pH beyond or lower than normal indicates carbohydrate malabsorption and inflammation in the intestine. While reducing sugars are commonly checked to diagnose lactose intolerance caused due to inadequate absorption of the lactose by a damaged intestinal lining.

This test is also useful in distinguishing between diarrhea caused by viral infection or diarrhea caused by abnormal excretion of various sugars. A high level of reducing substance in the stool suggests the presence of conditions such as lactase deficiency, short bowel syndrome, and carbohydrate malabsorption.
