Product introduction

Avistep 2mg/100mg Capsule is taken with or without food in a dose and duration as advised by the doctor. The dose you are given will depend on your condition and how you respond to the medicine. You should keep taking this medicine for as long as your doctor recommends. If you stop treatment too early your symptoms may come back and your condition may worsen. Let your healthcare team know about all other medications you are taking as some may affect, or be affected by this medicine.

The most common side effects are nausea, vomiting, constipation, and urine discoloration. Most of these are temporary and usually resolve with time. Contact your doctor straight away if you are at all concerned about any of these side effects. To overcome constipation, you should add fibre-rich foods in your diet and stay hydrated. Lifestyle modifications like having fiber-rich diet, increase fluid intake and regular exercise can help you to get better results.

Before taking this medicine, you should tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy or breastfeeding. You should also tell your doctor if you have any kidney or liver diseases so that your doctor can prescribe a suitable dose for you. You should consult your doctor immediately if you experience any allergic reactions symptoms include skin redness or rashes etc.

How Avistep Capsule works

Avistep 2mg/100mg Capsule is a combination of two medicines: Loperamide and Furazolidone which treat infectious diarrhoea. Loperamide is an opioid agonist which works by decreasing contraction of the intestines making the stools more solid and less frequent. Furazolidone is an antibiotic. It kills bacteria and other diarrhoea-causing microorganisms by damaging their DNA.

Quick tips

  • You have been prescribed Avistep 2mg/100mg Capsule for the treatment of diarrhea caused by bacteria or parasites.
  • Diarrhea can cause water loss and electrolyte imbalance. Drink plenty of fluids especially ORS (oral rehydration solution) to help keep you hydrated.
  • Do not use Avistep 2mg/100mg Capsule if you have blood in your stool or if you are severely constipated.
  • Stick to simple meals and avoid spicy rich food in order to avoid feeling sick (nausea).
  • It is best to avoid drinking alcohol while taking and till 4 days after taking this medication. This is because drinking alcohol with Avistep 2mg/100mg Capsule is likely to make you feel very sick (nauseated) and cause other unpleasant effects, such as hot flushes, headaches.
  • Avoid taking fermented foods like cheese, or fermented meat, fish, etc. in excess while taking Avistep 2mg/100mg Capsule as it may cause some side effects.
  • Consult your doctor if your diarrhea last for more than 48 hours.
