Dr. Jyoti Kapoor Madan
Psychiatry
Alcohol dependence is diagnosed when an individual compulsively drinks despite knowing it's ill effects on personal, social and physical health. Management involves detoxification phase during which medicines are given to ameliorate the withdrawal symptoms like disturbed sleep, tremors, irritability, confusion etc. Following detoxification, rehabilitation phase involves exploring drinking patterns and modifying them so that relapse is avoided. The process requires psychiatric consultation, supervision and counselling.
