Mesacol Enema is an anti-inflammatory medicine used to treat a type of bowel disease known as ulcerative colitis. It is used when the lining tissue of the inner rectum becomes inflamed (proctitis). It helps to reduce symptoms such as diarrhea, bleeding and stomach pain by reducing inflammation in the bowel.

Mesacol Enema is only for rectal route and should not be taken orally. It must be use under the supervision of a doctor or healthcare professional. Stay in a lying position for at least 15 minutes after the insertion of suppositories. The dose will depend on what you are being treated for but take it exactly as your doctor prescribes. You should keep taking this medicine for as long as your doctor recommends. If you stop treatment too early your symptoms may come back and your condition may worsen.
The most common side effects of this medicine include rectal discomfort, rash, itching, and fever. If these symptoms bother you, do not go away or get worse, tell your doctor. There may be ways of reducing or preventing them.

How Mesacol Enema works
Mesacol Enema is an aminosalicylate. It works directly on the site of inflammation (swelling) in the lower parts of large intestine (colon and rectum) to provide rapid relief from attacks of ulcerative colitis. It suppresses the production of chemical messengers (prostaglandins) that cause intestinal inflammation, thereby reducing ulceration, bleeding and painful symptoms.

- You have been prescribed Mesacol Enema for treating and lowering the symptoms of mild inflammatory bowel disease such as ulcerative colitis.
- It is for administration into the back passage (rectum). It must not be taken by mouth.
- Your doctor may monitor your kidney and liver functions before you start treatment with this medicine and regularly thereafter. Inform your doctor if you have severely decreased kidney or liver function.
- Do not use Mesacol Enema if you are allergic to aspirin or if you have blood disorders.
- Do not stop using the medication suddenly without talking to your doctor.
- You have been prescribed Mesacol Enema for treating and lowering the symptoms of mild inflammatory bowel disease such as ulcerative colitis.
- Take it with food. Do not break, chew, or crush the tablets or granules. Swallow them whole with plenty of water.
- Do not take antacids with Mesacol Enema as it can make your inflammation worse.
- Your doctor may monitor your kidney and liver functions before you start treatment with this medicine and regularly thereafter. Inform your doctor if you have severely decreased kidney or liver function.
- Do not take Mesacol Enema if you are allergic to aspirin or if you have blood disorders.
