Your child’s medicine at a glance

Give Novadox Dry Syrup to your child orally, either 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal. Avoid giving milk and other dairy products to your child within a few hours of giving Novadox Dry Syrup. Also, prevent your child from lying down for at least 1 hour after taking this medicine to prevent irritation in the throat. Prefer giving it at about the same time each day as that will help you remember. The dose will depend on the severity and type of infection, body weight, and age of your child. If your child vomits within 30 minutes of intake, help the child calm down and repeat the same dose, but make sure to never double up the dose if it is time for the next dose.

Some children may develop minor and temporary side effects after taking this medicine. These include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dry mouth, abdominal pain, tooth discoloration, and skin rash. These side effects usually go away once your child’s body adapts to the medicine. However, in case they persist for long or start bothering your child, you must consult your child’s doctor without any delay.

Your child’s doctor must be aware if your child has ever had any previous episode of allergy, heart problem, liver impairment, and kidney malfunction. This will guide the doctor in planning your child’s overall treatment.

Prevention of Malaria
In India, as per the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP), Novadox Dry Syrup may be used for the treatment as well as prevention of malaria. Children coming from other countries and visiting malaria-endemic regions of India are advised to start Novadox Dry Syrup a day or two before their visit and continue the same till 28 days after leaving the area. Children less than 8 years of age are advised to take alternative medicine as Novadox Dry Syrup is not safe in this age group.
Treatment of Bacterial infections
Novadox Dry Syrup is a versatile antibiotic medicine which can be used to treat many different infections caused by bacteria. These include infections of the blood, brain, lungs, bones, joints, urinary tract, stomach and intestines. It can also be used to treat sexually transmitted diseases. It stops the growth of the bacteria causing the infection and clears the infection. Take it for as long as prescribed by the doctor and avoid skipping doses. This will make sure that all bacteria are killed and they do not become resistant.
Treatment of Acne
Novadox Dry Syrup treats acne, commonly called pimples. It kills the acne-causing bacteria and prevents spots or pimples from appearing. It usually takes a few weeks to have a noticeable effect so keep using it even if it appears not to be working. Sometimes acne may get worse before it gets better, however, with proper use, your skin will get clearer. The earlier you start taking it, the less likely you are to get scars. This medicine will help improve your mood and uplift your confidence as your skin becomes acne-free.

Novadox Dry Syrup does not pose serious side effects and is well-tolerated by children. In case the side effects do occur, they’re likely to subside once the body adapts to the medicine. Quick tips

  • Maintain a sufficient time gap between meals and medicine intake as giving it before food poses a risk of stomach upset but giving it after food may reduce its absorption.
  • If your child develops diarrhea as a side effect, encourage them to drink plenty of water.
  • Give the medicine to your child while sitting or standing, to prevent any throat irritation. Do not let your child lie down for at least 30 minutes after taking Novadox Dry Syrup.
  • Do not give any calcium, magnesium, iron, vitamin, or antacid to your child within 2 hours of taking Novadox Dry Syrup as these can affect the absorption of the medicine.
  • Novadox Dry Syrup may make your child’s skin sensitive to sunlight. Avoid unnecessary or prolonged exposure to sunlight and make sure your child wears protective clothing, sunglasses, and sunscreen whenever going out in the sun.
  • Your child must complete the entire course of antibiotics. Stopping too soon may cause the bacteria to multiply again, become resistant, or cause another infection.
  • Discontinue Novadox Dry Syrup and inform the doctor immediately if your child develops a rash, itchy skin, swelling of face and mouth, or has difficulty in breathing.

Frequently asked questions

Novadox Dry Syrup is not safe to be given to children who are less than 8 years of age. It may interfere with the growth of teeth and bones due to its interaction with calcium and can result in tooth discoloration and bone deformities.
If Novadox Dry Syrup comes in direct contact with the throat and food pipe, it may cause mucosal irritation or injury. Hence, the child should not lie down immediately after taking Novadox Dry Syrup and should remain upright for some time.
Novadox Dry Syrup may cause an increase in blood sugar levels. Therefore, it is not safe to give this medicine to children who have diabetes mellitus.
Avoid giving Novadox Dry Syrup with food items such as milk, butter, yogurt, and cheese as well as medicines containing minerals like iron, calcium, and zinc as these foods may hamper Novadox Dry Syrup’s absorption in the body.
Novadox Dry Syrup can sometimes interact with other medicines or substances. Tell your doctor about any other medicines your child is taking before starting Novadox Dry Syrup. Also, check with your child’s doctor before giving any medicine to your child.
Antibiotics usually do not interfere with the ingredients in vaccines or cause a bad reaction in a child who has just been vaccinated. However, children taking antibiotics should not get vaccinated until they recover from the illness. As soon as your child feels better, the vaccine can be given.
Inform the doctor if your child is suffering from raised pressure in the brain, seizures, photoallergy (allergy from sunlight), neuromuscular disorders, and liver dysfunction. The reason being, Novadox Dry Syrup may aggravate these conditions and result in complications.
Although an extra dose of Novadox Dry Syrup will not have any side effects, it may lead to an overdose and cause side effects. So, if you think you have given too much Novadox Dry Syrup to your child, immediately speak to a doctor.
Call your child’s doctor without a delay if your child develops sudden vision loss, severe headache, seizures, liver dysfunction (paleness, weakness, vomiting), hyperpigmentation, tooth discoloration, chest pain, oral thrush, and bloody diarrhea (superinfection).
Ineffective treatment with Novadox Dry Syrup could mean that the medicine is not able to act against the infection-causing bacteria. In such a case, visit your child’s doctor who may prescribe some other antibiotic, that has a more specific action toward the infection-causing bacteria.
