Ademetionine is a natural substance found in cells, tissue, and body fluids. It is produced from methionine, an amino acid containing sulfur, and adenosine triphosphate (ATP). The nutritional supplement is harvested from yeast (fungus) cell cultures.
Ademetionine has been studied extensively for depression, osteoarthritis, and depression. But, there is no conclusive evidence that it is helpful in these conditions.
Patients with bipolar disorder (an illness characterized by mood swings, from depression to mania) should not be given Ademetionine for depression as it can worsen symptoms of mania. Also, consult your doctor if you are pregnant or nursing mother, have Parkinson’s disease or if you are HIV-positive.
The side effects of Ademetionine are usually not very serious. These side effects include headache, nausea, and diarrhea. However, these effects are not very common.
Information on long term safety of Ademetionine is limited. There is one study in which patients took it for 2 years and no serious side effects were reported.
