Giloy is a climbing shrub that grows from the botanical family Menispermaceae on other trees. The plant is native to India but also found in China and tropical areas of Australia and Africa. Giloy is also called giloe, guduchi, and amrita, among other names. The word “giloe” is a Hindu mythological term. It refers to a mythical heavenly elixir that keeps celestial beings eternally young. Giloy is scientifically known as Tinospora Cordifolia or Guduchi. The stem of Giloy is considered highly effective because of its high nutritional content and the alkaloids found in it, but the roots and leaves are beneficial too. According to a shloka of Charak Samhita, Giloy is one of the main herbs with a bitter taste. It is used in various disorders and helps alleviate Vata and Kapha dosha.
